In another of his keynotes, Joe Caruso presented The Power of Losing Control at a recent exclusive executive cruise (YPO Deep Dive) that took place aboard the cruise ship Silver Whisper. Joe, along with presenters including Elizabeth Smart, Essdras M. Suarez, Mike Song, Davd Marquet and others, had the chance to participate in a magnificent setting with engaged attendees interested in learning about a range of topics, from personal to professional.
Reaching the age of 100 is a remarkable achievement for any human. No matter how many years I have left, I hope to demonstrate the same love and commitment to my craft that I had the privilege of experiencing in a truly remarkable man, Martin Bergmann. The world lost a great mind when Martin died on January 22, 2014, less than a month shy of his 101st birthday. Martin Bergmann was a psychoanalyst, an author and an educator. If you’ve seen Woody Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanors, then you’ve seen him in action (more about that later).
“Everyone in life can be our teacher, but not everyone is a master. A master is someone whose life embodies whatever it is you seek.” — Joe Caruso, The Power of Losing Control (Chapter 9)
Martin was a man I highly respected for his work in psychoanalysis. Thanks to my good friends Dr. Curtis Bristol and Dr. Todd Davison, I was blessed to know Martin Bergmann personally. By studying his writing and through our personal meetings and discussions, I made him my master. A great man. A great analyst. A unique mind.
Joe recently took his studies of the simple, common, timeless human truths to Amsterdam and China. The mission of Caruso Leadership is to effectively help other people achieve their goals…and enjoy the process. Studying cultures brings invaluable insights as to how we function and communicate as humans. Studying the past also reveals keys to the our potential success or failure.

Congratulations to the leadership team, and all the employees of Hagerty, on being named a Great Place to Work® on the annual 2013 Best Small & Medium Workplaces list, published in FORTUNE magazine. Can’t say I’m surprised as I’ve had the pleasure of working with the great leadership team and employees at Hagerty.
Not every company decides to invest in their employees with leadership and organizational development, especially when they are at the top of their game. It’s nice to see that commitment to the organization reflected in the exceptional workplace environment and client relationships they have created, which has been recognized as one of the top in the country with this unique award.
Well done Hagerty!
Joe Caruso was the subject of a recent article in the Detroit Athletic Club‘s magazine for members only. In this ‘Leadership’ edition, Joe was interviewed about his life, his career as a leadership expert and advisor to other leaders, and his simple, timeless truths and insights that keep him in demand as a keynote speaker and expert consultant.
Title: “He Preaches Mind to the First Power”
Author: Mary Rodrique
“People who hear me speak can immediately apply strategies to their personal and professional life,” he said. “I know how to help people change the way they think and behave individually and in an organization. I can help them bridge the gap in what they have and what they want by changing the way they think.”
A basic premise of his message is letting go of the illusion of power.
“It frees us from our fears and allows us to bring more of ourselves to the work we need to do to be happy no matter what life brings us,” Caruso said.
A second book is in the works, focusing on optimization. “In America there seems to be two schools of thought – maximization or being happy with what you have,” he said.
“One faults on the complacency side, the other on never being happy with what you have. I think there is another way to optimize time with family and friends, to live a fully romantic, engaged and relevant life.”
As a proud member of the Detroit Athletic Club, it was a great pleasure to address fellow members and guests yesterday at the Keynote Luncheon sponsored by Intermediates and Business Roundtables.
Special thanks to those members who attended – the buzz in the room afterwards was energizing, and I was pleased to meet a lot of fellow members. As an author, it is always a treat to meet folks who have read my books; I learned yesterday that some DAC members have been employing the strategies I talked about in my keynote for years. Perhaps the biggest surprise were the members who arrived with their well-loved (read: dog-eared) copies of the The Power of Losing Control!
I’d also like say thank you to the tremendous staff members at the DAC for a flawless event; it is such a pleasure and honor to be a member of such an exceptional Club. Congratulations to Executive Manager, Ted Gillary, and the entire staff, for being named among the best and brightest companies to work for in Metropolitan Detroit, by the Michigan Business & Professional Association for the 13th consecutive year.
